Frequently Asked Questions

After you order the test, a buccal swab collection kit will be sent to you. Follow the instructions in the kit to collect a sample by rubbing the buccal swabs inside the mouth against the cheek. The sample collection process is fast, painless and takes only a few seconds to complete. After the sample is collected, return the sample to the laboratory for testing using ht ereturn pakcage provided in the kit.
The DNA kit does not have an expiration date and can be used at any time. Once you open the kit and collect the samples, the samples will remain stable for at least 3 months. The samples should be returned to the laboratory for testing within 3 months of collection.
There is no age limit. The test can be taken at any age, even newborns.
You can choose to receive your results by mail, email, or both. Results are released immediately once the testing is complete.
The minimum number of markers in the Paternal Ancestry Package is 20 Y-DNA STR markers. For most individuals, the 20 marker test is more than sufficient for most search and comparison applications. If you start with 20 Y-DNA STR markers, you can choose to test more markers at a later date if you need them. Testing more Y-DNA STR markers will increase the stringency of comparisons once a match is found.
Females do not have Y-DNA so it is impossible for a female to take the Y-DNA test.
Females do not have Y-DNA so it is impossible for a female to take the Y-DNA test.
Females wishing to trace their paternal lineage using Y-DNA can test the Y-DNA of a male relative such as a brother, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, or nephew along their direct paternal lineage.
Yes, both males and females inherit mtDNA from their mother, so both males and females can take the mtDNA test.
Instructions for logging in and activating your account in the search databases is provided with your results report once your test has been completed.
No, there is no charge for using the search databases.
The search databases are provided as a complimentary services for clients who have tested their DNA. The use of the database is optional. After you receive your final results report, you can choose whether or not to use the database.
Your Y-DNA Haplogroup is automatically determined for you in every Paternal Ancestry Package.
Your mtDNA Haplogroup is automatically determined for you in every Maternal Ancestry Package.
Y-DNA haplogroups represent the main branches of the Y-DNA Phylogenetic tree. Each Y-DNA haplogroup branches out into further sub-branches called subclades. After your Y-DNA Haplogroup is determined using the Paternal Ancestry Package, you can optionally choose to take a Y-DNA subclade test to determine which subclade your belong to. Please note that Y-DNA Subclade testing is currently only available for haplogroups E, G, H, I, J, L, N, O, Q, R1a, R1b, and R2.
Your mtDNA Subclade can be determined by testing all 3 regions of your mtDNA (HVR1, HVR2 and Coding Regions). Testing only the HVR1 and HVR2 regions without testing the Coding Region will allow you to determine your mtDNA Haplogroup. Further testing of the Coding region will allow you to determine your mtDNA Subclade.
Yes, the raw DNA marker data is provided for all DNA tests.
